Named after its famous desert, the Namib, which is believed to be the world’s oldest desert, Namibia has much more to offer than deserts & diamonds!

With great flight connections from Johannesburg & Cape Town, or perhaps an adventure drive over the border, Namibia is on our doorstep, but with a number of diverse activities & experiences, you’d be forgiven by thinking you’re in another world! Activities range from amazing photographic safaris, nature trails, bird watching & may be a little diamond hunting.

Driving is a fantastic way to explore this incredible country. Namibians also drive on the left making it very familiar to us South Africans.

To capture this flexibility, we have sourced a package that includes the convenience of flying to Windhoek mixed with the freedom of driving through Namibia & allowing a two centre stay in Etosha & Swakopmund.

Travel out at dusk where you can skim over the calm waters of New York’s East river. Behind you, Manhattan’s glittering skyline bathed in hues of pink, red and gold; ahead an industrial waterfront from a different era that is silhouetted against a clear but darkening sky. The journey alone to the borough of Brooklyn makes it worth venturing out of Manhattan.

Great travel tip! Ikea (the Swedish furniture store) in Brooklyn provides a free water-taxi from Manhattan.

Compared to Manhattan, Brooklyn offers great value & has an excellent section of trendy restaurants & cocktail bars as well as providing amazing views of the city.

New York has five boroughs (counties), each with their own unique attractions & reasons to visit; Manhattan – an island containing New York’s most famous icons & neighbourhoods, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx & Staten Island.

South African Airways is the only airline to fly non-stop daily to New York’s JFK from Johannesburg.

Down under is a pretty straightforward destination. There’s crocs at the top, wine at the bottom, Perth on the left, an opera house on the right and in the middle a great big rock.

Sydney may be Australia’s key city, but Melbourne has always had the reputation for being its coolest: it’s diverse and bohemian with a vibrant underground scene and cutting-edge arts and culture.

First-timers to the city seeking galleries, quirky bars and alternative shops will no doubt find their way to the famously fashionable seaside suburb of St Kilda.

For those of you who have ever fancied holidaying at a superstar’s home – now you can! Kylie Minogue’s holiday home on French Island, which is a national park south-east of Melbourne, has been sold & the new owners have turned it into a plush health spa retreat, due to open in April. Prices haven’t been set however this exclusive getaway will host up to 10 guests who will be pampered with chef prepared meals. Sadly Kylie will not be performing the after dinner entertainment.

The super affordable QANTAS Red E-Deal is back!

Great value fares to Australia

Brisbane – R8,296
Sydney – R8,317
Adelaide – R8,404
Perth – R8,059

Eat out in London for under a tenner

Dining out in London doesn’t necessarily have to ‘break the bank’!

Since the economic down-turn diners in London are demanding better value & are snubbing places that charge exorbitant prices. The culinary choice in London is staggering from Afghan cuisine to Vietnamese delights – the choice is yours entirely.

A traditional deep-fried battered fish & chip meal costs about £5 from the Fish Club in Wandsworth.

Caribbean Classic! True Jamaican jerk is served at Mr Jerk just off Oxford Street where a typical meal costs £8-9.

A good old burger from Gourmet Burger Kitchen serves burgers from under £4 & have outlets throughout the capital.

Vegetarians are also well catered for. My favourite is Eat & Two Veg in Marylebone High Street, not far from Oxford Street & Bond Street – a perfect pit-stop during a shopping trip. A plate of veggies will set you back about £5.

The above is just a handful that’s on offer. It pays to do a little homework before setting off thereby avoiding the tourist traps.

That time of year is fast approaching. The annual Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour will be taking place on Sunday 14th March with the race covering 109 kms of breathtaking scenery across the Cape Peninsula. To celebrate this most prestigious local event Travelstart have put together some great travel deals to the Mother City, along with some tips for travelling over the Cycle Tour period.

Since its humble beginnings in 1978 when only 574 cyclists took part, the Argus has grown tremendously with almost 40,000 entrants from all over the world now taking part.

You are required to check your bike in in advance of your travel date (at least 3 days prior to travel) & you must take your bike, along with your e-ticket, to the domestic cargo area. No bikes will be accepted for travel in the passenger terminals.

Bicycles must be packed as follows:

- Bicycle seat must be put down
- Handlebars turned parallel with frame
- Front wheel to be attached
- Pedals removed or turned inward
- Tyres deflated
