The U.S. has Minnesota as the land of lakes, and Poland has the Masurian Lake District. This abundant area west of Russia has over 2,000 lakes situated among rolling hills scattered with small towns, little farms and tracts of forests. It is no wonder that this district made it into the final 14, competing overall against 440 locations, for the New7Wonders of the World.

Although 20,000 square miles in size with lands fertile enough, especially for growing sugar beets, rye, potatoes and wheat, the Masuria district is sparsely populated. Its freshwater salt lakes set against lush forests and meadows draw a large number of tourists annually. Archaeologically, the area was molded by the Pleistocene ice age as is evident by its moraines and hills. The area consists of approximately 30 percent forest terrain and 15 percent water.

Once ruled successively by Teutonic knights, the Duchy of Prussia and eventually the Prussians of the German Empire, Masuria has been part of Poland since 1945. Compared to other regions in Poland, it is one that remains largely wild, and the countryside is still dotted with visual reminders of the past. Castles from the 17th century keep silent watch alongside tree-lined roads with redbrick structures of German influence.

Remotely situated in Poland’s northeastern corner, a lot of this district’s lakes are connected via an extensive river system. Krutynia, Czarna Hancza, Biebrza and Rospuda are some of the major ones. These rivers are popular with the locals and travelers for canoeing, fishing, biking and hiking. Green banks, sandy beds and white water lilies make even visitors fall in love with these natural wonders.

With so many waterfronts available, the district is full of lakeside centers. Besides the main port of Masuria, a popular boating destination for world-traveling tourists, notable ones include the resorts of Mikołajki and Giżycko. Local college student also flock to Masuria, adding to the population during the short summers.

Mikolajki’s promenade is busiest during the height of the tourist season from July until August and returns to its sleepy ambiance by October. Gizycko, the largest sailing center of the region and situated on Lake Niegocin, is even more popular. Its tumultuous history includes destructive invasions by Lithuanians, Swedes, Tatars, Russians, Poles and Germans. Gizycko’s historic fortress that witnessed it all makes it worthwhile braving the tourist crowds. In modern times the town functions as a transportation hub and supply center for water sports centers and lakefront holiday homes.

Smaller lakeside centers include Ruciane-Nida and Wegorzewo. The major urban areas are Olsztyn, Elk and Eblag. Masuria also has many hidden gems that remain mostly untouched by tourism. Travelers who want to see first hand why this area was a finalist should definitely bring their camping gear to explore this unspoiled, rugged natural wonder.

Once you've arrived in Australia, there are so many fantastic sights that await you, especially around the harbor. One of the most iconic images is The Harbor Bridge, a 1650 foot arch shaped span often nicknamed 'the coat hanger'. One of the best vantage points for Sydney's Harbor Bridge can be found by taking a seat in Mrs. Macquire's Chair. This is a special ledge created as a present for the wife of one of the governors.

The Sydney Opera House is another must see attraction for visitors to Sydney and a great way to explore it is by taking a special two-hour backstage tour. This gives you the chance to step up on the famous stage, wander in and around the orchestra pit and even hold the maestro's baton and pretend you are conducting a famous opera score. You also get to peek into the Green Room where many of starts have sat waiting to go on stage. With over 1500 performances each year, you might even be lucky enough to spot a someone famous during your tour.

For film lovers, why not try The Open Air Cinema. Located not to far from the Mrs Macquaries Chair in the Royal Botanic Gardens, this is probably the most expensive and also the hardest of the outdoor cinemas to get tickets to but also thought of as being the best. With availability selling out in hours in some cases, you should definitely plan this in advance of your trip. The backdrop of the harbor and the opera house make this the perfect way to spend a warm summers evening.

An attraction for younger kids can be a visit to the Sydney Aquarium . With over 11,000 creatures in their natural habitat, this is is a fun and educational way to spend the an afternoon with the little ones. There are plenty of exhibitions and events held here and one of the newer features is the Mermaid Lagoon, the only place to see a dugong – An aquatic mammal similar to a manatee.

For adventure lovers, why not see Sydney from a whole different view? From up above? Be blown away by the amazing views a helicopter ride over the sydney coast will offer. You really get to see the harbour of sydney in all it's glory and this really gives you a chance to take in just how beautiful it all is. Some helicopter tours also drop you off at a restaurant along the coast and then pick you and take you back after.

These are just five of the hundreds of things you can do in Sydney and also throughout Australia. There are plenty of ways to save money on your transport and accommodation, for example check out the best places for cheap car hire or travel during the less busier months. This means you can afford to do so many more activities during your trip.

Luxury stag weekends can be found the world over. That final moment of freedom should be a lasting experience, with fond memories shared for years to come. For the travel-savvy stag, there some top-notch destinations that need to be given careful consideration. If you are planning a stag weekend with the lads, head to one of these six unforgettable cities.

Atlantic City

Atlantic City is cheaper than Vegas and can compete with the more popular gambling destination on all levels. Located on the east coast of the United States, you’ll find flights shorter and often more affordable. With over 50 hotels to choose from, finding proper accommodations is never a problem. Inclusive packages at any one of the many casinos will take the planning out of your hands and into those of professionals.

Berlin

Whether you want to pub crawl or race around the Karting track, Berlin is a city of endless pleasure and excitement. With a late license, the city offers those on stag weekends the opportunity to party until well into the morning hours. Take the lads to the cabaret, hit some of the modern clubs or gather at a tavern; very little is off-limits in this wild city.

Istanbul

The capital city of Turkey is as exotic as it is modern. Spend your first night on a guided bar tour and ease your hangover in a Turkish bath. Relax your aches away as you alternate between hot and cold baths and be sure to throw in a professional massage for your mates. Do a bit of sightseeing and head out to the clubs for another amazing night.

Copenhagen

This trendy city knows how to entertain. With lovely ladies and a hustling night life, you can’t go wrong in Copenhagen. If you get tired of cocktails, take part in the myriad of day time activities the city offers: paintball, biking, Karting and sailing are all great ways to enjoy Denmark’s capital.

Zagreb

If you and the lads are looking for a destination a bit out of the ordinary and not quite as crowded as the more popular cities, Zagreb is what you’re looking for. The city is a cultural melting pot and a hotbed of clubs and bars. Ancient architecture amidst a modern atmosphere give way to forests that allow for any sort of outdoor activity.

Moscow

A true city for men, you’ll be taken care of properly in Russia’s modern city. Exotic ladies will entertain you at any of the gentleman’s clubs and exclusive lounges wait for your party. Sight-see during the day and take in all that Moscow has to offer and get ready for the night of your life. The hedonistic capital of Russia, you’ll not be left wanting in Moscow.

Update: I stand corrected. As pointed out by Hennie of The Announcer: "Kelly’s Beach in Port Alfred (Ndlambe) has since 2005/6 been awarded full BF status and once again on Tuesday at the national launch of the BF season."

South Africa has four new so-called “Blue Flag” beaches in 2011/12, but only on the condition that three of the four new beaches meet certain requirements by the end of November 2011. The Blue Flag is a certification issued by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) that a beach or marina meets its stringent standards. The main criterias include standards for water quality, safety, environmental education and information, the provision of services and general environmental management criteria. The Blue Flag is sought for beaches and marinas as an indication of their high environmental and quality standards.

The four new beaches in South Africa are Kelly’s Beach in Port Alfred, which was awarded the full status, as well as Silwerstroomstrand (Cape West Coast), Llandudno (Cape Town) and Keurboomstrand (Plettenberg Bay), which still need to complete steps such as ablution upgrading and putting up educational signage before receiving full status.

I allways kwew South Africa had some of the most amazing beaches in the world, and this just proves my opinion. Read the full article to also see a map of these blue flag beaches.

Algarve is a beautiful place in Spain with small fishing villages and small towns. It is an ideal place for tourist to relax and spend a quality vacation. In a company of family or friends the enjoyment doubles. All you would have to do is to just look for a big place to accommodate all loved ones in it comfortably. You might need a big villa with all the necessities and comfort for a nice vacation. One thing’s for sure, you need to confirm whether the villa is perfect one you are looking for, make a checklist, compare it with your checklist and then book it.

1. The bedrooms

To accommodate a bigger group of about 8 to 10 people you must have a minimum of 4 to 5 bedrooms in the villa, say 1 bedroom for 2 people. The bedrooms must have detachable comfortable double beds, centralized heating and also air conditioners. You might also check for a villa that gives you attached bathrooms with each room.

2. The bathrooms

Along with good and comfortable bedrooms, clean and equipped bathrooms are also a very important. The bathrooms must include shower panels, hot and cold water outlets. If you are willing to spend enough you can also look for villas that have spa bath tubs to add to the relaxation of your vacation.

3. Living and dining area

The living and dining area in the villa must have ample of natural light and wind supply. With a television and optional connections of satellite, cable TV, a DVD and a CD player it will definitely be very entertaining.

4. The kitchen

Kitchen is the most important part of the vacation; you would love homemade food on your vacation. Make sure that the kitchen is fully equipped with utility utensils, a refrigerator with water and ice dispenser, a coffee maker, a kettle, a microwave and other requirements of the kitchen. Also make sure that the dining area is close to the kitchen for easy serving. Yes, you can also look for the utility room with a washing machine attached to the kitchen to get clean washed clothes.

5. A pool with shade

It would be fun sitting by the side of the pool and dining during your vacation. Look for a pool side dinning option that includes a spacious shade and enjoy your meals.

6. An outdoor barbeque

An outdoor barbeque is an exceptional option. You can enjoy a backdoor barbeque with your loved ones and at a place like Algarve; it will be an amazing experience forever.

7. Surroundings

The villa must be little far from the population; however at a 10 to 15 minutes distance from the market, for you to get necessities from the market as and when required. You can also choose a villa that is close to the beach, to enjoy swimming in the beach or laze around on the sand. Villa close to amenities like a golf course for golf lovers is another fun.

Conclusion:

Looking out for options is good and smart too. You can make the most out of your vacation by choosing the right place to rejuvenate. The right utilities at the right price is possible but with a little research work. You can relax and have a great time with your family and friends. Surprise your loved ones with a dream vacation at Algarve.

There are more companies offering your family the opportunity to be adventurous, ditch the beach and head for a family skiing holiday instead, but the thought of taking your little ones out onto the slopes can be a daunting prospect.

Before booking your family holiday, you’ll want to think ahead and be prepared. The most important thing to consider is whether or not your tykes are old enough, or confident enough, to try skiing for the first time. As a general rule, children under the age of five are probably too young to start skiing as the amount of coordination required can be a challenge for them and the cold will probably leave them wanting to race back to the cabin as quickly as possible. This needn’t be a deal breaker though – many ski resorts now come specially equipped with children’s clubs which incorporate skiing alongside other, warmer activities to keep them happy while you hit the slopes.

It’s generally not advised that you attempt to teach your children to ski unless you’re an accomplished skiier yourself. Choose a resort that has children’s ski schools as these will be led by an instructor who is proficient in teaching children.

Equipment is a tricky one – skiing gear can be pricy and children grow so quickly that the equipment you buy them one year most likely won’t fit the next. If you can borrow or rent gear before you travel this is usually a good idea, but if not then try second-hand sports gear shops for bargains. There are of course some items of clothing that you can’t avoid having to buy. A decent pair of gloves is utterly necessary, but bringing two pairs is advisable. Kids tend to want to have snowball fights or play about in the snow and wet gloves are quite useless for skiing. Stringed mittens are a godsend on the slopes for smaller children prone to losing their gloves.

Safety is important on the slopes. Don’t forget that just because it’s cold and wintery that the sun can be a big danger for children – always ensure to apply high-factor sun cream in the morning no matter what the weather and ensure it stays topped up.

Tipping in different foreign countries can be a complex and confusing experience. This problem can be quite frustrating when you are an active traveler. You wonder how much tip does a cab driver expect and does he expect a tip at all. Your problems will not stop there. You will wonder the same thing at Hotels, night clubs and restaurants. I have never really thought about it until I kept having the same problem over and over again in the countries I have been in. That is why I decided to find out the tipping behavior in different countries and service industry.

USA

Tipping a waiter in the USA

In the USA waiters make less money than the federal wage ($2.13/hour). This is why they expect to get a good tip from the customers when they visit the restaurant. A normal tip in the USA is approximately 15-20%. Sometimes, the credit card slip (where you sign the amount) may already have several suggested tip amounts calculated for your convenience (10%, 15%, 20%). You can either include the tip in the credit card slip itself or pay separately by cash. Do know that if you include the tip in the credit card slip, restaurants often don't give the tip to the waiters. So I strongly advise you to pay the tip in cash.

Tipping a cab driver in the USA

In the United States it is normal to pay a cab driver 10% of your taxi fair. This is of course if he helps you load and unload the bags.

Tipping a bellboy in the USA

At a hotel, the bellboy who handles the bags should get $1-$2 per bag. This is especially In New York City very appreciated.

Tipping for a haircut or beauty treatment in the USA

When you go for a haircut or beauty treatment, you should generally tip at least 10%-20% to the provider of the service. This is very unusual in countries outside of the US and does not happen in every state. In many countries, they never heard of a tip for a haircut.
Note that tips can vary within the country and that in big cities they usually tip more than in little ones. For example in NYC they tip more than in San Angelo Texas.

England

The tipping behavior in England is very different than it is in the US. In England, waiters do not get paid less than minimum wage. So the tip depends mostly on various factors. For example: the place, the food and the quality of service. If it is an elegant place, a tip is certainly expected, but even than it would not be more than 10%. People from England feel that good service is simply part of their job. In a less fancy restaurant, a tip is not expected but small tip is appreciated.

Tipping a cab driver in England

Tipping the cab driver however is the same as in the United States. The amount is about 10% of the total fare.

Tipping a bellboy in England

A Bell boy gets just like in the US around the 2 pounds.

Spain

Tipping a waiter in Spain

The first thing you should know when entering Spain is that tipping is not mandatory. You only tip in classy, sit-down restaurants, where the service is good. If you like, you can also tip in cafeterias, but most people just leave their change. The idea of a typical American 15-20% tip does not exist in Spain.

Tipping a cab driver in Spain

The same rule applies with cab drivers. They don’t expect a tip. But if you really want to thank him for doing something extra, just politely ask him to keep the change.

Tipping a bell boy in Spain

It is a courtesy gesture to tip a bell boy after he just carried your luggage to your room, but not mandatory.

China and Japan

Unlike the United States and Europe, it is in China not part of their culture and traditions to tip. At many establishments there is even a strict no tip policy. This includes massage studios, barbers, restaurants and more. Some Chinese people will think it is impolite to offer gratuity because they feel like what they do is undervalued.

Tipping in Hong Kong

Tipping in Hong Kong is a whole different story. Tipping in Hong Kong is even bigger than tipping in New York City. A cab driver will round up the amount as a tip to himself, a bellboy expects a tip of $5 – $10 per bag, restaurants include a 10% tip and expect you to tip some extra and classy restaurants and hotels include a 15% service charge. You pretty much have to tip everywhere.

Conclusion

The tipping amount varies per country. Even within a country or area the tipping behavior can be very different from each other. If you have any knowledge about tipping in a particular country I would love to hear it.

A trip to South America is a truly unforgettable experience that is sure to create memories that last a lifetime. From the dramatic skylines to deep jungles, the contrasting regions of South America will take your breath away. Here is our exclusive guide of 7 Reasons to visit the land of exquisite beauty and endless fascination.

1. Beaches in Brazil

''é minha praia'' translated as ''That's my Beach'' in English, is the Brazilian equivalent of the famous British expression ''That's my cup of tea'' – summing up all you need to know about Brazil's easy going culture. Many of the thousands of beaches are located beneath palm trees in the tropics, stretched across 8,000km of coastline, giving you a wide variety to choose from. Many people in Brazil believe that it's most stunning beach is located at the heart the Amazon rainforest. Alter Do Chao, around 30km from Santarem, is the famous jungle's river beach answer to the Caribbean. In Rio De Janeiro, tourists commonly flock to the popular Copacabana Beach to soak up the party atmosphere. Farol Beach is Rio's quieter, calmer alternative, popular among those wanting a tranquil setting. Beaches in Natal are well-known for having incredible turquoise colored waters, which are frequented by dolphins and turtles.

2. Cuisine in Colombia

Similar to other cultural expressions of national identity, Colombian cuisine varies among its various regions. Along the Caribbean coast, pork and Whale liver are used in mild spicy food with Coconut Rice being a typical dish of choice along the coastal cities. Colombia is also famous for having many fruits that cannot be found anywhere else worldwide, including a very small, sweet version of a Banana, which is definately worth trying. Fruit and juice stands are scattered all over the country, particularly on the Caribbean coast where tourists are most commonly found. If you find yourself in Santa Marta, be sure to visit Donde Chucho, a sumptuous family-run restaurant offering traditional dishes at very reasonable prices.

3. Entertainment in Ecuador

Ecuador is known across South America as being the party capital, with an electric nightlife complimenting it's status as a classic Latin American country popular among those who know how to enjoy themselves! In the new town of the captial city of Quito, the nightclubs are packed all year round, with plenty of local bars and hostels offering fantastic savings on drinks and accomodation. As well as being able to party the night away, Ecuador also provides visitors with brilliant daytime entertainment and activities. Rafting in the Amazon jungle, mountain biking around the highest active volcano in the world, scuba-diving with dolphins and guided walking tours of Quito are just some of the amazing opportunities waiting to be exploited in Ecuador.

4. Bird Watching in Buenos Aires

The Reserva Ecologica Costanera Sur, the largest nature reserve in Argentina, is a multi-purpose area located in Buenos Aires which attracts over 15,000 visitors every weekend. Within it's boundaries you will find four lakes as well as willows and shrubs providing natural habitats for more than 200 different species of bird. Locals also use this picturesque location as a place to exercise and meet with friends, creating a very warm friendly atmosphere. Bird Watching opportunities are also available in the local parks and in the spring you will see the unique 'downtown' birds as well as stunning green parrots, located in the flamboyant Jacaranda trees.

5. Markets in Montevideo

Montevideo, Uruguay's capital city, is excellent for anybody who enjoys the traditional market atmosphere. The Tristan Narvaja Market, which is staged every sunday, has been the most popular flea market in Montevideo for over 50 years, with vendors selling everything from clothing, crafts and jewellery to fruits and vegetables. The Mercado del Puerto, the city's open-air Port Market, is busiest at weekends, when street musicians and craft sellers line the way alongside stalls that allow you to sample the authentic local foods such as empanadas. For visitors interested in quality crafts and antiques then be sure to check out the Villa Biarritz Fair, staged on saturdays, which is an ideal place to pick up small gifts and personal souvenirs.

6. Past of Peru

Draped in history, Peru is a country that is excellent for all visitors who like to explore. The most famous landmark in Peru, and perhaps the whole of South America, is the Machu Picchu site. Built around 1450 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, this stunning 15th-century Inca site is located over 2,000 metres above sea-level and situated on a mountain ridge above the Urabamba Valley. Machu Picchu was built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stoned walls. There are three primary buildings; The Temple of the Sun, The Intihuatana and The Room of Three Windows, which can all be found in what is known by archaeologists as the Sacred District of Machu Picchu. Other popular ruins in Peru include those of Caral, Nazca lines, Chan Chan, all adding to the growing ecotourism market.

7. Sightseeing in Santiago

Santiago, the capital city of Chile, is a stunning location filled with numerous sightseeing opportunities for people of all ages and interests. The city is filled with various landmarks, from historical museums and cathedrals to modern sports stadiums. There are many local tour operators offering guided trips around the city for very reasonable prices, as well as a brilliant public transport system, ideal for those who like to explore at their own leisure. Popular places of interest include the Municipal Theatre of Santiago, Palacio de La Moneda and the Metropolitan Cathedral. The national stadium is also located in Santiago, a stunning structure with a capacity of 50,000, so be sure to take in any sporting event that occurs during your stay! You will also be amazed at the amazing skyscrapers with a stunning mountain back drop in the heart of the city, a breathtaking sight when witnessed after sun rise. Santiago is also a very popular destination for luxury cruises around the Cape Horn for people who want to see Chile's stunning coastline from the sea.
